Heard of Princess Bookie's Contest Craze? If you haven't, make sure to check it out. This is one of her mini-challenges leading up to the contest craze.
With so many awesome books coming out in 2011, it was difficult to narrow it down to just 5. "Challenge" indeed.
After struggling a bit, I finally settled on these:
1. City of Fallen Angel by Cassandra Clare
I've read everything Cassandra Clare has written thus far and have yet to be disappointed. I'm utterly attached to the entire Mortal Instruments Gang (even Simon, who REALLY bugged me in the first two books). I'm really excited to see what kind of trouble they'll get into next. And what Magnus will do/say. He's such a great character and I'm glad I get to see more of him.
2. The Demon's Surrender by Sarah Rees Brennan
I love Sarah Rees Brennan's writing. Love. It. The pacing of plots in her books are perfect. Her characters are lovable, and their dialogue even more so. I love the inclusion of family bonds, how that has more importance in these books than romantic ones. In YA, it's a rare thing but SRB pulls it off. When reading the first book, I couldn't connect with Mae. After reading the second book from her POV, I grew to love and understand her. But I noticed that I felt the same distance from Sin that I felt about Mae when I was in Nick's head. I'm really hoping I'll grow to like and understand Sin after reading her POV. Even if I don't, the rest of the characters and SRB's brilliant storytelling will keep me reading.
3. Mastiff by Tamora Pierce
I feel like I've been waiting for this series to wrap up. On one hand, I'm desperate to know what happens to Beka and the others. On the other, I'm not ready to say goodbye yet. The great thing about Tamora Pierce is that she brings some of her characters back in other books. I never manage to see all of the plot twists that the author weaves, either. I love how after reading so many of her books she still keeps me guessing and has mostly avoided a formula.
4. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
Love her writing, love the humor, love the characters. Also, this series has absolutely stunning covers. I read the first book in one sitting and cannot wait for this one.
5. The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta.
Saving Francesca is, if I have to choose, probably my favorite book of all time. I loved the characters so, so much and really connected with the story. I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Marchetta, even the more "difficult" reads where I've suffered right along with the characters. I'm so glad that I get to hear more about the characters from Saving Francesca and meet new ones. I'm really looking forward to getting inside Tom's head!
